A new home, a relaxing trip to Fiji, and filling a swimming pool with green Jell-O are just some of the thousands of things huge amounts of money can buy. Winning the lottery can prompt people who suddenly find their bank accounts bursting to make expensive purchases. Some make sensible choices, such as buying a house. Others choose to spend money frivolously. But most people, upon hitting the jackpot in a lottery would fit somewhere in between the spectrum.

Powerball is a popular lottery game played in 29 of the 50 American states. These states are not clustered in any one area; they are scattered everywhere from the East coast to the Southwest. The lottery game is also played in Washington D.C. and the Virgin Islands. To play Powerball, the gambler must purchase a $1 ticket. Many people choose to purchase more than one ticket, since doing so increases chances of success. Each ticket contains six numbers, one of which is the Powerball number. Customers can choose which numbers they want on a ticket, or they could ask for a ticket with random numbers.

To win the jackpot, always in the millions of dollars, a player must match all six numbers. Winning numbers are chosen Wednesday and Saturday nights. The first five are arbitrarily chosen from a 55 white balls, and the Powerball number is randomly picked out of 42 red balls. The results of each drawing are shown on TV across the nation. Powerball results are also available online, allowing players to conveniently check their numbers.

Winning the jackpot is difficult; odds are one in 146,107,962. However, there are nine different ways to win. Depending on how many of a player's number match the winning numbers, gamblers can win different amounts. Matching less numbers means the winner receives less of a prize. Aside from the jackpot, players can win $200,000, $10,000, $100, $7, $4 or $3. Odds increase as the prize money decreases. The chances of winning $3, which means only the Powerball number matches, are one in 68.96. The Powerball website asserts overall odds of winning a prize are one in 36.61. These odds are fairly good, but they still leave many players angrily crumpling up their tickets after hearing the results of the drawing.

Jackpot winners win ridiculously large amounts of money. On January 24, 2007, the Wilson family won a $254 million jackpot. In February of 2006, a group of workers at a ConAgra Foods plant in Nebraska won an unfathomable $365 million Powerball jackpot. However, upon winning, most players opt to receive their prize money in cash immediately, rather than stretching out their winnings over the years. Making this choice greatly reduces the amount of money the lucky gamblers receive. For instance, the ConAgra workers chose to receive cash, and they ended up with $177.3 million. Taxes also lower the amount of prize money received.

From winning millions of dollars to receiving three single dollar bills, many people find playing Powerball both exciting and rewarding. Although the Powerball company ultimately benefits the most, players across the nation continue to purchase tickets, keeping alive the idea that one day they could strike it rich.
